SuperbikePlanet has a two part interview with Colin Edwards in which he discusses the importance of having a good computer programmer on the team. In particular he describes how the use of electronic traction control has affected MotoGP racing. This is where the onboard computer measures wheel slippage, and reduces engine power to compensate. This interview is the most candid discussion on this topic that I have ever seen. Two years ago you couldn't get Honda to admit they were even using traction control in their MotoGP effort. I suppose it becomes hard to hide once everyone notices your engine sputtering at corner exits.
Q That leads to my next question. How big of a part of MotoGP is traction control?A As a rider, I see a bit of the bigger picture, I think. But most riders'll tell you oh, the rider's 90% of it, and the data guy's 10%. I don't think that's right. I think it's like 50-50. It's almost getting to a point where you're as good as your programmer.
