Well, it was a valiant effort, but I decided to postpone my track day to allow more time to properly finish up the great front end swap. I had been stressing a bit lately after being stymied in my efforts to track down either a 04 gixxer 750 brake lever, or a 10x1.25 double banjo bolt. Acquiring either of these pieces would have allowed me to make use of my nifty new steel braided brake lines, that I have already partially installed. I had expected the brake lever in particular to be as common as dirt, but sadly no. It's a new design this year that is unavailable on the aftermarket, and on perpetual backorder from the dealer. Nevertheless, I was not worried because my backup plan of just using the stock brake lines, was gauranteed to work.
And it would have worked too, but brake lines will do you no good if you have no tires. Yes, I have just been informed by the local speed shop that my tires are on backorder, and they didn't specify the correct oddball size for the rear anyway, and for some reason my name wasn't even on the special order list. Argh! Of course, none of this was mentioned when I called them two days ago. So I'm faced with the hassle of tracking down some tires at the last minute, getting them mounted, hastily buttoning the bike together, hauling the completely untested assemblage of parts 160 miles north, only to find some critical flaw that will no doubt ruin my whole day. No thanks. Better to postpone now, finish the swap properly, test it, and give it a go some other time.
The good news is that I now have no plans for the holiday weekend. I can relax, sleep in, play videogames, ride my other motorcycle, whatever! Does anybody want to come over and watch a movie?
[update] I got home tonight to find a message on the answering machine from one of the local motorcycle dealerships. The brake lever has arrived. Argh!
